Insurance for Environmental Consultants

Environmental consultants are concerned with the prevention of injury to the environment from a client’s operation. They also assist clients in the control or clean-up of existing damage or exposure to environmental concerns. An environmental consultant may arrange for testing of gas emissions, monitor air quality, or review compliance with regulatory agencies regarding hazardous waste disposal. Asbestos abatement advice and assistance, and the containment and removal of lead exposures, are common types of assistance that an environmental consultant may provide. Environmental consultants may be able to recommend or assist in the selection of qualified contractors to resolve the particular problem under review. Many environmental consultants are engineers. They must to be able to draw upon and apply a great deal of knowledge and training in the areas of higher maths, as well as the natural and physical sciences.

What Insurance do Environmental Consultants need?

Minimum recommended cover can usually be arranged on a Professional Indemnity (PI) combined policy to include Buildings, Computer Equipment & General Contents, Increased Expenditure, Employee Dishonesty, Public Liability, Employers’ Liability

Other covers to consider are Cyber Liability, Employment Practices Liability, Commercial Vehicle, Employee Benefits, Directors and Officers Liability, Excess of Loss/Difference in Cover.

Property Insurance

Property exposure is primarily an office exposure. There may be considerable storage of customers’ records, which significantly adds to the fire load. Storage should be in fireproof cabinets and fire suppression systems must not damage the papers. If there is a testing laboratory on premises, chemicals must be separated and stored in fireproof cabinets.

Property Liability

Premises liability exposure is limited to occasional customer visits. Areas accessible to the public must be free of obstacles with floor coverings in good condition. Off-site exposures consist of visits to customers’ premises and to job sites. There should be procedures in place for enforcement of rules regarding off-site conduct by employees.

Crime Insurance

Crime exposure is limited to Employee Dishonesty. Ordering, billing and disbursement duties must be separated and regular audits performed. Employee dishonesty issues may arise when an employee is on a client’s premises. Background checks should be conducted before permitting any employee to visit clients.

Employers’ Liability Insurance

Employers’ liability exposure is two-fold. The office exposure consists of repetitive motion injuries. All workstations should be ergonomically designed. Off-site exposures are due to visits to customers’ premises and to job sites. If there is a laboratory on premises, employees may be exposed to pollutants, toxins or known carcinogens. Employees should have appropriate safety gear when visiting a job site or while working in laboratories.

Commercial Vehicle / Motor Fleet

Motor vehicle exposure comes from the vehicles used to travel to visit customers and to job sites. All drivers must be licensed with driving records checked regularly. If vehicles are supplied to employees, there should be clear guidelines, especially regarding personal or permitted vehicle use.

Professional Indemnity Insurance (PI)

Professional liability exposure can be extensive. Consideration must be made as to potential for environmental damage due to ineffective advice or incorrect testing practices. All procedures must be followed with inspections regularly conducted. Documentation must be clear, with changes marked and authorisations signed by both the consultant and the customer. Customers can suffer financial loss if they must pay fines or cease operations due to a government order because of environmental concerns. Release of pollutants can cause property damage to surrounding areas.

What other risks does an Environmental Consultant face?

Other exposure consists of Book Debts, Computers, and Deeds and Documents. Computer systems must be backed up regularly and have adequate security features to prevent unauthorised access due to industrial espionage or by hackers. Deeds and Documents include research projects and information supplied by client companies. All information should be duplicated, with copies stored off-site. Any books that are used in research should be catalogued in case of damage. There may be an off-premises exposure if consultants take tools and equipment to clients’ job sites.
